Cleveland, Ohio – Swimmers along Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline are facing a high risk of dangerous rip currents through Friday, prompting officials to urge everyone to stay out of the water. The warning covers beaches from Lucas and Ottawa counties in the west, all the way to Ashtabula Lakeshore in the east, as strong wind and wave action continue overnight and into Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, the Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for Lucas, Ottawa, Erie, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake, Ashtabula Lakeshore (OH), and Northern Erie County (PA). The greatest risk runs from 2 a.m. Thursday until at least Friday afternoon, with some areas extending warnings into Friday evening. Officials warn that swimmers entering Lake Erie could be pulled away from shore by rip currents, especially near sandbars and piers.
Cities directly impacted include Toledo, Sandusky, Lorain, Cleveland, Mentor, and Ashtabula. Local agencies may close beaches or restrict water access. Lifeguards and first responders urge everyone—especially children and less experienced swimmers—to stay on dry land. Travel near the lakeshore may be affected by emergency activity.
If you plan to visit Lake Erie, avoid swimming, paddle boarding, or wading until advisories expire. Have a charged cell phone, supervise children near the water, and respect any posted warnings or beach closures. Rip currents this strong can be deadly—even for experienced swimmers.
The threat is expected to ease late Friday as winds diminish. However, authorities remind residents and visitors to check for updates, as additional advisories may be issued if hazardous lake conditions continue.
