CLEVELAND, Ohio –
Lake Erie will be dangerous for swimmers Thursday as the National Weather Service warns of strong rip currents and hazardous waves along the Cuyahoga County shoreline. The threat begins at 10 a.m. and continues through late tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, winds and wave action will create powerful currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore. The most dangerous areas include spots near sand bars and piers where currents intensify. Officials urge residents to remain out of the water until conditions improve.

The beach hazard alert extends across the northeast Ohio lakeshore, including Cuyahoga, Lorain, Ashtabula and Erie counties, as well as northwest Pennsylvania. While skies will clear into the weekend, today’s rip currents pose the most significant threat for anyone entering the water.

Boaters are also advised to use caution, as strong winds from the west at 15 to 20 mph may produce choppy conditions on Lake Erie.

The Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until late tonight, with calmer weather expected Friday and through Labor Day weekend.
