uerto Ángel, Oaxaca – Gale-force winds are rapidly intensifying offshore tonight, creating life-threatening conditions for mariners in the Gulf of Tehuantepec with waves building as high as 16 feet.

According to the National Hurricane Center, north to northeast winds are increasing to 30 to 35 knots north of 14°N through late Saturday night, with slightly weaker but still hazardous 20 to 30 knot winds extending farther south. These ուժ winds are driving steep seas between 10 and 16 feet, creating dangerous conditions for small and mid-sized vessels.

The strongest impacts are concentrated east of Puerto Ángel, where persistent northerly wind surges funnel through the Chivela Pass and accelerate over open water. Vessel operators should avoid the area entirely, as wave heights and wind speeds can overwhelm navigation, especially during nighttime hours.

Conditions will remain hazardous into Sunday, with seas still reaching up to 15 feet before gradually subsiding Sunday night. By Monday, winds are expected to weaken to 15 to 20 knots, with seas lowering but remaining elevated.

Mariners are urged to secure vessels, delay departures, and monitor official updates. Gale conditions will ease early next week, but rough seas may linger into midweek.
