Oxford Township, MI – A Michigan environmental concern turned into a swift recovery mission this week after several metal barrels were spotted submerged in Lake Erin, prompting a coordinated response from local and state agencies.

According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), a resident reported seeing two large drums beneath the lake’s surface near East Drahner Road. The township contacted the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, whose Search and Rescue Team, led by Lt. Brian Burwell, located and retrieved the barrels Tuesday evening.

Each 55-gallon drum was filled with clear lake water and showed extensive rust damage. “I’m sure these are old barrels—they’ve been in here forever,” Lt. Burwell said. He confirmed there was no evidence of contaminants in or around the area.

The Sheriff’s Drone Unit later identified three additional barrels, which were recovered Wednesday. Two disintegrated due to corrosion, while one contained lake water and sediment.

Township Supervisor Jack Curtis commended the Sheriff’s Office for its rapid response. “When EGLE contacts you and says there’s a potential issue in one of your lakes, you don’t want to wait,” Curtis said. “Fortunately, we didn’t have to because we have immediate access to the sheriff’s resources and expertise.”

A full report will be submitted to EGLE for review and to determine if further environmental testing is necessary.
