Oak Ridge, Tenn. – A fast-moving tornado is threatening parts of East Tennessee this afternoon, prompting urgent warnings for residents to shelter immediately.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a tornado warning is in effect until 1:30 p.m. EDT for southeastern Morgan, southwestern Anderson, western Knox, and northeastern Roane counties. Radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado near Oliver Springs at 12:45 p.m., moving east at 25 mph.

Communities in the storm’s path include Oak Ridge and Oliver Springs, with the greatest danger expected around 12:50 p.m. Flying debris poses a serious risk to anyone not in shelter, and damage to roofs, trees, and vehicles is likely. Mobile homes may be destroyed.

Drivers on regional routes near Coalfield and rural areas of Knox County should avoid travel and seek sturdy shelter immediately. Residents are urged to move to a basement or an interior room away from windows and protect themselves from flying debris.

The tornado warning remains active until at least 1:30 p.m., with additional alerts possible depending on the storm’s development.
