New York City, New York – A widespread winter snow event will blanket the city and surrounding suburbs late tonight through Sunday morning, bringing hazardous travel and several inches of accumulation during the most impactful overnight hours. Snow begins late this evening and intensifies overnight, targeting the early Sunday commute.
Light snow develops after 6 p.m., possibly mixed with rain at the onset, then turns to steady snow after 10 p.m. The heaviest period runs roughly from midnight through 8 a.m. Sunday, when snowfall rates of one-half inch per hour are likely, with brief bursts up to one inch per hour possible. Snow tapers off mid to late Sunday morning, ending by early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service office in New York, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. tonight to 1 p.m. Sunday for the five boroughs and much of northeast New Jersey, southern Connecticut, and southeast New York. New York City is expected to receive 3 to 5 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts possible. Long Island will see the highest totals, where Suffolk County could pick up 4 to 6 inches, with isolated 7-inch amounts under persistent bands. Areas north and west of the city, including parts of the Hudson Valley and interior Connecticut, should expect 2 to 4 inches.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly overnight. Snow-covered streets and reduced visibility are likely on I-95, I-278, the FDR Drive, the Belt Parkway, and the Long Island Expressway. According to transportation officials, untreated roads, bridges, and ramps will be slick during the overnight and early morning hours. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time Sunday morning.
Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways, where compacted snow may turn icy. Conditions improve gradually late Sunday morning as snowfall ends and crews catch up on treatment.
