New York City, NY – New York City could see one of its most disruptive snowfalls of the season Friday night as a strengthening winter storm moves into the metro area, with nearly 8 inches of snow possible in parts of the city and surrounding suburbs.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for New York City, northeastern New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley, Nassau County, and western Suffolk County from 4 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday. Forecast models show 4 to 8 inches of snow expected, with a reasonable worst-case scenario of 8 to 10 inches if heavier snow bands stall over the area.

Snow is expected to develop late Friday afternoon, becoming heavy Friday evening and overnight. The NWS warns that snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible Friday night, which could quickly overwhelm road crews and make travel hazardous.

Neighborhoods across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island are all expected to see accumulating snow. The storm is likely to severely impact the Friday evening commute, with rapidly deteriorating road conditions, slick bridges, and reduced visibility.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the mid to upper 20s, allowing snow to accumulate efficiently. Snow may start out dry and powdery before becoming wetter and heavier overnight, increasing the strain on plowing operations.

Snow is expected to gradually taper off Saturday morning, but lingering impacts could continue into early afternoon.

City officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel Friday night, use public transit if possible, and prepare for delays. Anyone who must drive should allow extra time, slow down, and keep emergency supplies in their vehicle.
