New York, NY – Anyone stepping outside early this morning felt it instantly: the tri-state region plunged into its coldest early-season temperatures in seven years, according to the National Weather Service New York office.

The agency reported widespread lows in the teens — and even single digits in some spots — before a slow rebound into the 20s and 30s later today. Central Park dropped to 19°F, marking the park’s coldest temperature this early in the season since 2018.

According to the National Weather Service, several major airports across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut recorded lows between 14°F and 21°F, including LaGuardia, JFK, Newark Liberty, and Long Island MacArthur. Westchester County Airport and Groton-New London Airport each bottomed out at 14°F, among the lowest readings of the morning.

Forecasters say the sharp dip comes from a surge of Arctic air sweeping across the Northeast, creating a brief but intense early-winter snap. While today’s sunshine will help temperatures climb back above freezing, wind chills may linger in the teens through late morning.

The cold start follows a milder fall season and signals a more winter-like pattern setting in for the region. Meteorologists expect temperatures to return closer to seasonal norms by midweek.

Residents are urged to bundle up, check on vulnerable neighbors, and be cautious of icy surfaces during the morning commute.
