Albany, NY – An EF-1 tornado was confirmed in Saratoga County, New York, following a damage survey conducted on Tuesday, July 16. The tornado, which struck near Great Sacandaga Lake, recorded estimated peak winds of 110 mph, spanning a path length of 0.55 miles and a width of 50 yards.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Albany, the tornado began at 4:48 PM EDT, two miles northeast of Edinburg, and dissipated at 4:50 PM EDT, three miles northeast of Edinburg. Despite the tornado’s intensity, no fatalities or injuries were reported.
The survey, aided by the New York State Police’s Unmanned Aerial Systems program, revealed that the majority of the damage along South Shore Road in the Town of Day resulted from strong rear flank downdraft winds. Drone footage confirmed a narrow swath of tree damage consistent with low-level rotation. After the tornado came ashore, it moved up Bailey Hill before dissipating.
The Albany, NY Weather Forecast Office expressed gratitude to the New York State Police for their significant assistance in completing the survey. The tornado’s classification on the Enhanced Fujita Scale is EF-1, indicating winds between 86 and 110 mph.
