Chicago, IL– Heavy rain is quickly turning roads and neighborhoods into danger zones across northwest Indiana as a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, areas of northern Jasper, southern Lake, northern Newton, and southern Porter counties have seen 1 to 4 inches of rain since early afternoon, with an additional 1 to 2 inches possible. Radar and rain gauges indicate flash flooding is already underway in towns like DeMotte, Wheatfield, Lake Village, and Kouts.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded streets, low-lying areas, and underpasses. Local emergency management warns that creeks, drainage ditches, and small streams are rising rapidly. Areas including Roselawn, Shelby, Schneider, and Dunns Bridge may see blocked roads, stranded vehicles, or power outages if rain continues.

Residents should move to higher ground immediately and avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Charge mobile devices, gather emergency supplies, and stay tuned to updates from local officials.

The Flash Flood Warning covers much of northwest Indiana until at least 6 p.m. More rain or additional warnings could extend the threat into the evening hours.
