Crown Point, IN – Residents of Crown Point are being warned about a new scam in which callers allegedly pose as police officers, claiming individuals have outstanding warrants or missed jury duty and demanding payment to resolve the issue.
According to a public notice issued Monday by the Crown Point Police Department, scammers are allegedly instructing victims to make payments through bitcoin to settle supposed matters with the Lake County Courts. Police emphasized that courts do not call individuals regarding warrants, and any legitimate court warrants are served in person.
The department further noted that courts never request payment via gift cards, Apple cards, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or similar electronic payment platforms. Payments related to official court matters are typically handled in person at the Lake County Government Center, officials said.
Authorities encouraged residents to verify any pending court cases or warrants through official sources, such as mycase.in.gov or the Lake County Sheriff’s warrant division by calling 219-755-3057. The public can also search their names on the Lake County Sheriff’s website at lakecountysheriff.com/warrant for additional information.
The Crown Point Police Department urges anyone receiving suspicious calls to avoid providing personal information or making any payments. Residents are asked to report these scam attempts to local law enforcement to help prevent further incidents in the community.
