Iqaluit, NU — Wind chills in Iqaluit are plunging to dangerous lows, prompting safety concerns for residents across Nunavut.

According to Environment Canada, wind chill values dipped to -34°C early Thursday and are expected to remain dangerously low through Friday morning. Combined with actual air temperatures near -22°C and gusty northwest winds up to 28 km/h, the risk of frostbite remains high, especially during overnight hours when temperatures fall below -23°C.

Daytime highs will remain bitterly cold, reaching only -17°C on Thursday and Friday. The wind chill may moderate slightly in the afternoons, dropping to around -25°C, but early morning exposure remains hazardous. Nighttime lows through the weekend are forecast to stay between -22°C and -28°C, with clear skies on Monday contributing to even colder overnight readings.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, dress in multiple insulating layers, and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite. Visibility remains good at 48 km, but freezing conditions can affect vehicle function and travel plans. No official weather alerts are in effect, but the risk of frostbite persists under current conditions.
