Rapid City, S.D. – Drivers across western South Dakota woke to dense fog Monday morning, with visibility dropping to less than a quarter mile in spots from the Black Hills to the western plains.

According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. MDT for areas including Harding, Butte, Meade, Pennington, Jackson, Bennett, and Oglala Lakota counties, as well as northeastern Crook County in Wyoming. The thick fog developed overnight and is expected to gradually lift by late morning.

Communities such as Rapid City, Belle Fourche, Sturgis, Wall, and Martin are seeing the most dangerous travel conditions early, particularly on highways like I-90 and U.S. 85. Drivers are urged to slow down, keep headlights on low beam, and leave extra space between vehicles to avoid accidents.

While the fog will clear by mid-morning, another round of patchy fog is possible in valleys and low-lying areas late tonight into early Tuesday.
