Moorhead, Minnesota – Northwestern Minnesota residents are facing a dangerous night as severe thunderstorms roll across the region, bringing the risk of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated power outages until 7 a.m. Friday. The overnight watch stretches from Clay and Becker counties east to Roseau and Kittson, with impacts likely for travelers and anyone outdoors after midnight.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, severe storms are already moving into the Red River Valley and will continue tracking eastward overnight. Counties included in the watch are Becker, Clay, Clearwater, Kittson, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Otter Tail, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, Roseau, and Wilkin. Residents in Fargo-Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, and surrounding areas should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel.

Wind gusts over 60 mph could down trees and powerlines, with hail also possible. Motorists traveling along I-94 and U.S. Highway 75 are urged to use caution as sudden downpours may reduce visibility and cause hydroplaning. Prepare for possible power outages and keep weather alerts enabled overnight.

The thunderstorm threat remains until sunrise, with additional warnings possible as storms move through. Stay tuned for updates and be ready to take shelter if alerts are issued.
