Superior, WI – Strong thunderstorms are expected to intensify across northwest Wisconsin this afternoon, bringing large hail up to a quarter in size, damaging winds reaching 60 mph, torrential downpours, and dangerous lightning. The storms could cause hazardous travel and brief power outages, especially in rural areas where trees and power lines are vulnerable.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the greatest risk for severe weather extends from Superior to Hayward and Park Falls, with conditions developing by mid-afternoon and persisting into the evening. The strongest cells may also clip the far eastern Twin Ports region. Drivers should be prepared for sudden low visibility and slippery roads from heavy rain, while boaters on Lake Superior face a heightened risk from lightning and high winds.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid open areas during lightning, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for updates. While the tornado threat remains low, the combination of hail, wind, and lightning could still cause damage and injuries.

Storm chances will diminish later tonight, but scattered showers may linger into Sunday morning.
