Amarillo, Texas – Thunderstorms sweeping across the Texas Panhandle could drench communities from Dumas to Pampa through Monday evening, raising the risk of flash flooding and travel delays.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the heaviest rain is expected overnight into early Monday morning, with the most active storm band arriving from the southwest and moving northeast between 8 p.m. Sunday and 8 p.m. Monday. A secondary round of storms is anticipated Tuesday evening, potentially compounding saturated conditions.
Cities including Amarillo, Guymon, Clayton, and Canadian could see several rounds of downpours and embedded thunderstorms. Rainfall totals may exceed flash flood thresholds in low-lying areas, especially near creeks, underpasses, and poorly drained roads. Emergency managers urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways and monitor alerts throughout the day.
The timing of the storms coincides with Monday morning commutes, and residents are encouraged to check local road conditions and delay travel if possible. Charge mobile devices in advance and secure loose outdoor items ahead of potential strong wind gusts.
More rain is expected midweek, with updated advisories possible Monday night. Flash flood watches may be issued if rainfall intensifies beyond current projections.
