Amarillo, Texas – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across the Texas Panhandle tonight, bringing the potential for 70 mph wind gusts and hail as large as golf balls from 5 p.m. through 9PM. Communities from Dumas to Wellington could see the brunt of the storms as they sweep in from the northwest.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms are likely to begin as early as 4 p.m. in the western Panhandle, including areas like Dalhart, Dumas, and Vega. The most intense activity is expected between 5 and 9 p.m. as the line moves east toward Amarillo, Pampa, and Borger. Eastern cities like Canadian, Clarendon, and Wellington could see storms peak between 8 p.m. and midnight.
The main threats include damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter. Power outages, tree damage, and dangerous driving conditions may accompany the storms. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple methods to receive warnings. Take shelter immediately if a warning is issued for your area.
