Amarillo, Texas – Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected to escalate across the northwest Texas Panhandle on Thursday, with wind gusts topping 55 mph and humidity levels plummeting—setting the stage for fast-spreading wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a critical fire weather alert is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, driven by intense southwest winds and bone-dry air. The most at-risk zones include Dalhart, Stratford, Dumas, and surrounding areas, where the fire threat is rated at Level 2 (elevated) to Level 3 (critical).
Residents near Boise City, Guymon, and Vega may see the strongest gusts between noon and 6 p.m., with blowing dust reducing visibility and increasing travel dangers on major roadways like US-54 and I-40. Loose outdoor items should be secured to avoid property damage or injury.
Officials urge residents to avoid open flames, secure equipment that could spark, and call 911 if smoke or fire is detected. Fire starts could spread rapidly under these conditions.
Wind intensity is expected to drop by 8 p.m., but fire weather alerts may be extended if conditions persist.
