Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service in Amarillo is warning of a strong cold front bringing freezing to hard-freeze conditions across the Texas Panhandle by midweek. Forecasters say a “killing freeze” is possible for parts of the central and northwest Panhandle on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, potentially ending the growing season.

According to the US National Weather Service Amarillo, there is a greater than 70% chance of temperatures dipping below 32°F across much of the region early Wednesday, with the northwest Panhandle facing lows near 28°F or colder. The freeze risk will persist into Thursday morning, with a 60–80% likelihood of another hard freeze event, especially around Dalhart, Guymon, and Stratford.

Officials are advising residents to protect sensitive vegetation, cover outdoor faucets, and bring pets indoors as the cold settles in behind Tuesday’s frontal passage. Temperatures are expected to rebound slightly by the weekend, but the chill could mark the first widespread freeze of the season for many areas.

Residents should continue monitoring local forecasts for updated temperature projections and freeze warnings through late week.
