Lubbock, Texas – Flash flooding is threatening rural stretches of northwest Texas Sunday evening as slow-moving thunderstorms dump heavy rain across three counties northeast of Lubbock.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 8:30 p.m. for northeastern Floyd, northwestern Motley, and southeastern Briscoe counties. Radar estimates show 1 to 2 inches of rain have already fallen, with up to 2 additional inches possible.
The threat is most acute in low-lying areas and near creeks, especially on rural roads and at low water crossings. Travel is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways entirely. Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles, and emergency officials stress: “Turn around, don’t drown.”
The impacted zone includes mostly unincorporated areas, but emergency management across the South Plains region remains on alert as storms remain slow to move out.
Warnings may be extended if rainfall continues. Drivers in the area should monitor local media or NOAA Weather Radio for updates through the evening.
