State College, PA – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Warren, McKean, and Elk counties beginning 10 AM Sunday and continuing through Monday afternoon, as forecasters warn that heavy lake effect snow could create hazardous travel conditions across northwest Pennsylvania.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, lake effect bands may produce 6 inches or more of snow, with locally higher amounts where persistent bands develop. In addition, winds could gust up to 45 mph, leading to blowing snow, drifting snow, and sharply reduced visibility on exposed roadways.
Communities including Warren, Bradford, St. Marys, and Ridgway may see rapid changes in conditions—a hallmark of lake effect events. According to the NWS, one town could receive steady snow while another just a few miles away sees only flurries.
Travel impacts are likely, especially for the Monday morning commute, when freshly fallen snow and drifting could cover roads shortly after they have been cleared. Tree branches may also be stressed by the combination of wet snow and strong gusts.
Forecasters emphasize that lake effect snow is highly localized, shifting with wind direction and intensity. Drivers should be prepared for sudden visibility drops, snow-covered roads, and slippery conditions through Monday afternoon.
Residents are encouraged to stay aware of forecast updates from weather.gov/StateCollege as the snow bands evolve.
