Bradford, PA – A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for McKean and Warren counties in northwest Pennsylvania, as forecasters warn of heavy snowfall and dangerous travel conditions heading into the Thanksgiving holiday. The warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Thursday through 1 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in State College.
Forecasters expect 6 to 12 inches of snow, with locally higher totals possible in areas that see persistent lake effect snowbands. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, creating whiteout conditions and making travel very difficult to impossible at times.
The most hazardous period is expected Thursday morning through Thursday evening, when snow intensity and wind gusts will peak. The storm’s timing could significantly impact Thanksgiving travel along U.S. Routes 6 and 219, and other highways across northern Pennsylvania.
Meteorologists caution drivers to keep winter safety kits in their vehicles, including extra clothing, food, water, and flashlights in case of emergencies. Visibility may vary sharply within a few miles as snowbands shift, making conditions unpredictable throughout the day.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and delay nonessential travel, particularly during the height of the storm Thursday.
