Erie, PA – A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect for Northern and Southern Erie Counties from 1 a.m. Thursday through 1 a.m. Saturday, as a powerful lake effect event threatens to disrupt Thanksgiving travel across northwestern Pennsylvania.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, total snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches are expected, with localized amounts up to 18 inches possible inland across Erie County. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 50 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow, whiteout conditions, and scattered power outages.

Forecasters warn that roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour at times Thursday into Thursday night, with visibility dropping to less than a quarter mile. The worst conditions are expected Thursday morning through Friday, coinciding with peak holiday travel.

Residents are urged to delay unnecessary travel and to keep emergency supplies—including flashlights, blankets, and water—inside vehicles. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation advises monitoring 511pa.com for the latest travel restrictions and road conditions.

Snow showers are expected to taper off by early Saturday as winds weaken and lake effect bands shift eastward.
