Portland, Ore. – Dangerous heat is returning to northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, with inland cities facing five straight days above 90 degrees beginning Thursday. The hottest stretch is expected Friday and Saturday, when highs could climb close to 100 degrees, putting residents at risk of heat-related illness.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, overnight lows will provide little relief, staying near 70 degrees and making it difficult for homes to cool down. Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
The heat will be most intense away from the coast, with Portland, Ridgefield, and Hood River forecast to endure triple-digit temperatures this weekend. In contrast, coastal cities such as Astoria and Florence will remain significantly cooler, with highs between 70 and 75 degrees and lows in the 60s.
Utility providers warn of high electricity demand from air conditioning, and local emergency managers are preparing cooling centers across the metro area. Heat advisories are likely to be extended if the warm pattern lingers into next week.
Warnings remain in effect through early Tuesday, with the hottest inland conditions Friday through Sunday.
