Enid, Okla. – Residents across northwest Oklahoma face a dangerous night as a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until midnight Tuesday, bringing the risk of tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, storms are expected to intensify this evening with the potential for scattered hail up to two inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 70 mph. A couple of tornadoes are also possible, particularly across counties including Woodward, Alfalfa, Ellis, and Garfield.
Communities such as Enid, Woodward, and Alva are under heightened risk as storms push through after sunset, creating low visibility and dangerous driving conditions. Emergency officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings overnight, charge devices in case of power outages, and avoid travel during peak storm activity.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation advises caution along major highways including U.S. 412 and U.S. 183, where strong crosswinds and hail could make driving hazardous. Schools and hospitals in the affected area are monitoring conditions closely with shelter plans on standby.
The severe thunderstorm watch will remain in effect until 12 a.m. Tuesday, with additional warnings likely as storms develop.
