Lima, OH – Drivers across northwest Ohio could encounter sudden downpours, lightning, and gusty winds Tuesday afternoon as strong thunderstorms develop across the region ahead of an approaching system.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 78 remains in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday for several northwest Ohio counties including Allen, Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert, and Williams.

Cities such as Lima, Defiance, Bryan, and Wauseon may see storms intensify during the late afternoon hours, potentially impacting travel on key corridors including Interstate 75, U.S. 30, and U.S. 24. Brief heavy rain could quickly reduce visibility while wind gusts may knock down small branches or scattered debris onto roadways.

Emergency officials recommend securing outdoor furniture and staying indoors when thunder is heard. Lightning remains one of the biggest risks with storms moving through populated areas.

Travelers heading home during the evening commute should allow extra time and remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions. Additional warnings could be issued if storms strengthen before the watch expires at 6 p.m.
