Fort Wayne, IN – The US Drought Monitor released Thursday shows worsening dry conditions across northwest Ohio and northern Indiana, with “Extreme Drought” now officially expanding into Adams, Cass, and Miami counties. The update, issued October 9, 2025, highlights the growing concern for farmers and residents as the region remains largely rain-free.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, rainfall over the past week has been “very hit or miss,” with only 0.50 to 0.75 inches reported in parts of southwest Lower Michigan and far northern Indiana—insufficient to improve soil moisture or streamflow levels. No significant rainfall is forecast over the next seven days, officials added.

The US Drought Monitor notes that “short-term drought, with localized longer-term impacts,” has intensified from southwest Missouri through northern Illinois and into northwest Ohio. These dry conditions have kept precipitation deficits high and stream levels very low.

Experts warn the ongoing drought could heighten the risk of field fires and diminish fall foliage colors across the region. Without substantial improvement this winter, soil moisture shortages could extend into next spring’s planting and growing season.
