Boone, NC – The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia has extended a Winter Weather Advisory for northwestern and north-central North Carolina through noon Tuesday, December 9, 2025, as black ice forms overnight on roads and sidewalks.

The advisory includes Ashe, Alleghany, Surry, Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin Counties, affecting cities such as Boone, Sparta, Wilkesboro, Yanceyville, and Eden.

Forecasters warn that any remaining moisture or melted snow on roads, bridges, and sidewalks will refreeze overnight, creating slick and hazardous travel conditions. Temperatures are expected to dip below freezing across much of the region by early morning.

Drivers should use extreme caution during the Tuesday morning commute, as black ice can be difficult to see—particularly on shaded or elevated surfaces. Pedestrians are also urged to watch for icy spots on sidewalks and driveways.

Travelers can check the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting DriveNC.gov.
