Blacksburg, Virginia – Slow-moving thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding this afternoon through tonight across southwest Virginia and the foothills of northwest North Carolina, especially west of I-77.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, heavy rainfall from scattered thunderstorms is expected to intensify during the evening, with some storms training over the same areas. The greatest risk for flash flooding lies west of Interstate 77 and into the Blue Ridge foothills, where streams and creeks may quickly overflow. Low-lying areas and urban zones will be especially vulnerable.

Communities from Galax and Hillsville, Virginia, to Mount Airy, North Carolina, should stay alert for rising water and potential road closures. The risk of flash flooding is categorized as moderate, meaning life-threatening flooding is possible in certain locations. Water may cover roads rapidly, particularly near rivers, small creeks, and poorly drained city streets.

Residents with evening travel plans are urged to check local alerts, avoid flooded roads, and have multiple ways to receive emergency updates. If flash flooding begins, move to higher ground immediately. Never attempt to drive through high water.

Rainfall rates may ease late tonight, but further advisories remain possible. Flash Flood Warnings could be issued with little notice.
