Spirit Lake, Iowa – Strong storms are moving through northwest Iowa this morning under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday. Gusty winds, lightning, and heavy downpours are possible, with the greatest impact expected along rural highways and small towns across Lyon, Dickinson, and Osceola counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, the watch covers communities including Rock Rapids, Spirit Lake, and Sibley. The main threats are damaging wind gusts over 60 mph and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. Localized flooding in low-lying spots is also possible where rain rates peak.

Drivers on Highway 9 and Highway 71 should watch for ponding water and sudden visibility drops in heavy rain. Residents are urged to stay indoors during storms, secure loose outdoor items, and charge phones in case of power outages. Farmers with equipment in the field are advised to move machinery to safe shelter before storms intensify.

The watch remains in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday, though additional warnings may be issued if storms strengthen.
