Crown Point, IN – Officials in Lake County are urging drivers to stay off the roads this morning as heavy snow continues to create treacherous travel conditions across northwest Indiana. Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. issued a statement early Monday advising residents to use “extreme caution” due to significant snow accumulation and slick surfaces throughout the county.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reports that more than 100 snowplows are currently operating across the northwest district to clear major routes and highways. The Indiana State Police Lowell Post also reminded drivers that bridges and overpasses freeze first, warning motorists to reduce speeds and increase following distance to prevent accidents.
Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially on rural and secondary roads that remain snow-covered and icy. Additional state troopers have been activated in anticipation of potential crashes overnight.
Travel conditions are expected to remain hazardous through the morning commute as plow crews continue clearing snow and treating surfaces.
