Gary, IN – A band of lake effect snow is creating slippery travel conditions across northwest Indiana this morning, with snow rates reaching 1 inch per hour in some areas, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago/Romeoville.

Forecasters say snow will pivot eastward around southern Lake Michigan between daybreak and noon, affecting communities including Gary, Merrillville, Valparaiso, and Chesterton. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with locally higher totals possible.

Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses may become slick, particularly during the morning commute. Drivers are urged to slow down and increase following distances if encountering heavier snow bands.

More intense lake effect snow is forecast to develop tonight and continue into Monday, prompting a Winter Storm Warning for Lake and Porter Counties starting at 10 p.m., and a Winter Weather Advisory for Jasper and Newton Counties beginning at midnight. Both alerts remain in effect through 6 p.m. Monday.

The upcoming lake effect event could bring heavier, localized snowfall totals and dangerous travel conditions near the Lake Michigan shoreline.
