Gary, Indiana – Dangerous heat is gripping Northwest Indiana, with heat index values set to reach a sweltering 105 degrees by Wednesday afternoon. Residents from Hammond to Rensselaer are urged to take precautions as extreme temperatures and high humidity move into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Heat Advisory is now in effect for Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Benton counties from 1 p.m. CDT (2 p.m. EDT) through 7 p.m. CDT (8 p.m. EDT) Wednesday. The advisory warns of elevated risks for heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors or without access to cooling.

Local cities including Gary, Merrillville, Valparaiso, and DeMotte could see heat index values top 100 degrees for several hours. Commuters should expect hot conditions along major routes like I-65 and U.S. 30, while schools and outdoor work crews are encouraged to limit activities during peak heat. Emergency officials urge residents to drink water regularly, seek air-conditioned spaces, and check on vulnerable neighbors or relatives.

This marks one of the hottest stretches of July so far for the Indiana-Illinois border, reminiscent of last summer’s heat wave. The National Weather Service cautions that additional advisories could follow if the heat lingers past Wednesday.

Heat risks remain elevated through midweek; further alerts may be issued if conditions persist. Stay tuned for updates.
