Rensselaer, Indiana – Drivers across northwest Indiana are dealing with snow-covered roads and hazardous travel conditions this evening as light but steady snowfall continues to impact the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through this evening for Benton, Jasper, and Newton counties. Additional snowfall of one to two inches is expected, enough to keep untreated roads slick and reduce visibility at times, especially on rural routes.
The impacts are being felt across communities including Rensselaer, DeMotte, Roselawn, Morocco, Fowler, Kentland, and Oxford. Snow-covered roadways and reduced traction are making travel difficult, particularly during the evening hours when temperatures remain cold enough for accumulation. Local roads, bridges, and overpasses are the most likely trouble spots, where even small amounts of snow can quickly lead to slide-offs or minor crashes.
Transportation officials are urging motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking. Pedestrians are also advised to use caution on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways where snow and ice can create slick conditions.
Snow is expected to taper off later this evening, but slick spots may linger overnight as temperatures stay cold. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through tonight, and drivers should remain alert until road conditions improve.
