Valparaiso, Indiana – Drivers across northwest Indiana should prepare for treacherous road conditions beginning Monday afternoon as a new system brings accumulating snow and falling temperatures into Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, snow will move into the region late Monday, with accumulations expected primarily north of U.S. Route 30 and along I-80/94 and I-65. Commuters traveling through Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties could face rapidly deteriorating conditions during the evening rush hour.

Snowfall rates may approach 1 inch per hour at times, particularly between 4 p.m. and midnight. Roads such as U.S. 30, I-94, and I-65 could become snow-covered quickly, with plow crews working around the clock to maintain traction. Gusty winds may also reduce visibility, further complicating travel near open stretches and overpasses.

Tuesday morning will bring lingering snow showers and freezing temperatures, keeping secondary roads and untreated surfaces slick into midweek. Drivers are urged to slow down, check local road conditions before leaving, and give extra space to plows and emergency vehicles.

Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve Monday night into Tuesday morning.
