Gary, Indiana – Residents in Northwest Indiana are being urged to limit outdoor activities as elevated ozone levels trigger an Air Quality Action Day through midnight Tuesday, July 15, 2025. Air in the region is expected to reach levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups—including children, seniors, and those with lung conditions.

According to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), ozone (O₃) concentrations will be highest from late morning through early evening, affecting Lake, Porter, and surrounding counties. The alert, issued Monday, warns that individuals with asthma or other respiratory illnesses should avoid strenuous activity outdoors and keep windows closed. Local agencies recommend using air conditioning and carpooling or limiting vehicle use to help reduce ozone pollution.

Major roadways like I-80/94 and U.S. 30 may see reduced visibility and increased health risks, especially during the afternoon heat. Summer camps, outdoor work crews, and schools are advised to modify schedules to minimize outdoor exposure. Similar ozone episodes occurred in 2021 and 2023, often coinciding with heatwaves and stagnant air.

The Air Quality Action Day will remain in effect until midnight Tuesday, with additional advisories possible if high ozone persists. Residents can check current conditions and updates at SmogWatch.IN.gov.
