Chicago, Illinois – Severe storms swept through northern Illinois and northwest Indiana Monday evening, bringing flash flooding, lightning and strong winds that left roads underwater and power lines down across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, heavy rain developed in DeKalb County before pushing east through downtown Chicago, where streets quickly filled with water during a late-afternoon downpour. Ground stops were issued at both O’Hare and Midway airports, while crews in Genoa cleared fallen trees and live wires.
In northwest Indiana, the Lake County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency reported up to three feet of water along Indianapolis Boulevard from 120th to 129th Streets, as well as Dickey and Riley roads in East Chicago and Whiting. Officials warned drivers not to attempt flooded routes. Hammond firefighters issued an urgent notice after dozens of flooding calls, urging residents to stay out of water-filled basements due to electrical hazards.
Flooding was also reported in Naperville, where city crews worked overnight to keep roads passable. Meanwhile, a thunderstorm over Lockport produced dangerous winds and an intense lightning show across the south suburbs.
Storm warnings remain in effect through Tuesday morning, with more heavy rain possible. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and keep devices charged in case of power outages.
