Valparaiso, IN – Thanksgiving travel is becoming hazardous across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana today as strong winds batter key highway corridors, making driving difficult along major interstates including I-65, I-80, I-94, I-55, and I-57 through Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. CST, with sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts topping 55 mph across key corridors. Motorists heading through open areas, particularly on north-to-south routes like I-65 and I-57, face strong crosswinds capable of pushing high-profile vehicles out of lane.
Blowing debris and falling limbs have already been reported in parts of Cook, Will, Lake, and Porter counties. Drivers along I-39 and I-90 should also be prepared for sporadic gusts near 60 mph, especially close to the Wisconsin state line.
Officials urge travelers to use caution, secure lightweight holiday decorations, and consider delaying trips until winds subside tonight. Power outages remain possible, with crews on alert across both states.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken after sunset, but updates may follow if conditions worsen or damage reports increase.
