ATLANTA, Ga. – A sharp blast of Arctic air will bring the coldest temperatures of the season to north and central Georgia late Sunday through early Tuesday, prompting widespread Freeze Warnings and Watches across the Atlanta metro and much of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, subfreezing temperatures near 28°F are expected overnight Sunday into Monday morning, with even lower readings possible in higher elevations of northeast Georgia. A Freeze Watch follows Monday evening through Tuesday morning, when lows could plunge to between 20°F and 27°F — cold enough for a hard freeze from the Tennessee line south through the I-20 corridor.
The freeze warnings include Atlanta, Rome, Gainesville, Carrollton, Peachtree City, Marietta, and Dalton, as well as surrounding counties from Dade to Henry. The cold snap is expected to damage unprotected pipes, outdoor plumbing, and tender vegetation. Georgia Emergency Management officials urge residents to wrap exposed pipes, drain garden hoses, and bring pets and plants indoors before nightfall.
Drivers should be cautious of icy patches on bridges and overpasses during the early commute Monday and Tuesday. Farmers and gardeners are advised that any remaining late-season crops could be lost to the widespread hard freeze. The chill will ease slightly midweek, though mornings will stay well below normal.
