Rome, GA – Northwest Georgia faces heightened fire danger through Sunday evening as gusty winds and dry conditions raise the risk of wildfires, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory, issued early Sunday morning, warns residents in counties including Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Chattooga, Gordon, and Floyd to use extreme caution with outdoor burning. Sustained winds from the south-southwest are expected at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching 25 mph, creating a volatile environment for fires to spread quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, although relative humidity values will likely remain above 25 percent in the northwest, the combination of wind and dry fuels remains dangerous. These conditions are expected to last until approximately 8 p.m. Sunday.

Residents are urged to check with local burn permitting authorities before engaging in any outdoor burning. Even permitted burns should be monitored closely, and fires should never be left unattended.

This advisory follows similar warnings issued across central and northern parts of the state, where dry air and lighter winds have also increased fire risks.

Officials emphasize that Georgians should delay outdoor burning until conditions improve and follow local fire safety guidelines.
