Grand Junction, Colorado – Blowing snow and wind gusts up to 60 mph could make travel nearly impossible across the Elkhead and Park Mountains through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. MST Thursday for the Elkhead and Park Mountains, including Columbine, Hahns Peak and Toponas. Total snow accumulations between 10 and 20 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible in favored terrain.
Blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibility to near zero at times, especially along high-elevation roads and mountain passes. Drivers along Colorado Highway 13 and remote backcountry routes may encounter sudden whiteouts during heavier snowfall.
Strong winds could snap tree limbs and cause isolated power outages in exposed areas. The hazardous conditions may impact both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes for mountain communities and travelers.
Officials urge motorists to delay travel if possible and check Colorado 511 for the latest road conditions. Snow and strong winds will persist into Wednesday night before gradual improvement begins after daybreak Thursday.
