CRAIG, Colo. – A sharp drop in temperatures is expected across northwest Colorado, where the National Weather Service in Grand Junction has issued a Freeze Watch from midnight Monday night through 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Subfreezing temperatures as low as 27°F are possible across the Central Yampa River Basin, including Craig, Hayden, and Meeker. According to the NWS, the cold could damage or kill late-season crops and harm unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Residents are encouraged to cover or move sensitive plants indoors and drain irrigation or sprinkler systems ahead of the freeze. Early commuters Tuesday morning should plan for frosty windshields and slick spots on rural highways, especially U.S. 40 and State Route 13.

Temperatures will rebound to near 60°F Tuesday afternoon under sunny skies, but another cold night could follow midweek as calm, dry air lingers across the Western Slope.
