Eureka, California – Gusty winds are set to ramp up quickly by Friday afternoon, creating hazardous driving conditions along coastal highways and exposed ridges just ahead of the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, northerly winds will intensify late Friday, with peak gusts between 20 and 30 mph expected Saturday afternoon. The strongest winds will target coastal headlands and higher terrain, including areas near Crescent City, Trinidad, and Shelter Cove.

Travel impacts are likely along U.S. Highway 101, especially in open stretches between Eureka and Crescent City where crosswinds can push high-profile vehicles. Inland communities such as Weaverville and Willow Creek will also see gusty conditions, though slightly weaker than along the coast. In Mendocino County, Fort Bragg and Point Arena could see gusts exceeding 20 mph through Saturday evening.

Light winds Thursday will give way to increasing gusts Friday, with the most sustained impacts occurring Saturday before easing Sunday. Loose outdoor items may be blown around, and isolated power disruptions are possible in wind-prone areas.

Drivers should keep both hands on the wheel, especially in coastal corridors, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak gust periods Saturday afternoon. Winds gradually diminish late Sunday, but breezy conditions may linger into early next week.
