Birmingham, Alabama – Residents across central and northwest Alabama should brace for dangerous heat Wednesday, as a Heat Advisory takes effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., pushing heat index values as high as 106 degrees in Birmingham, Jasper, and Tuscaloosa.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a combination of soaring temperatures (94–97°F) and stifling humidity will impact the western and northwestern counties of central Alabama, including Fayette, Hamilton, and Tuscaloosa. The advisory warns of “moderate to major” heat risk, especially for those spending extended time outdoors or without adequate cooling.
Birmingham, Jasper, and Tuscaloosa are among the cities expected to experience the highest heat indices. Drivers are urged to check their vehicles for pets and children, while schools and workplaces should prepare for possible heat-related illnesses. Strenuous outdoor activities should be limited during the advisory, and local agencies recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight clothing, and checking on vulnerable neighbors.
With power grids under added strain, officials remind residents to use air conditioning wisely and ensure fans are working properly. This marks one of the hottest periods so far this summer, and similar advisories could follow if conditions persist.
The Heat Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Wednesday. Stay tuned for additional updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency agencies.
