Duluth, MN – Light precipitation is expected to move across northern Minnesota from Wednesday through Thursday morning, with a brief window for freezing rain and snowflakes to mix in before warmer air pushes the region back to mainly rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a 10% chance of freezing rain exists Wednesday morning across Koochiching County, where a light glaze of ice could form on elevated surfaces and untreated roads. The icing risk is expected to remain localized and brief, ending by late morning as temperatures rise.

Most other locations across the Northland—including the Minnesota Arrowhead and South Shore areas—will experience periods of light rain, though forecasters note that occasional snowflakes may mix in at times. Overall precipitation chances remain elevated through Wednesday night, with on-and-off rain showers continuing into Thursday morning.

The Weather Service says impacts should remain minor, though any trace of early-morning ice could create slick patches, particularly north of International Falls and near the Canadian border. By Thursday, all areas are expected to transition back to rain as temperatures moderate.

Residents traveling early Wednesday are advised to use caution and watch for isolated slippery spots, especially on bridges and untreated secondary roads.
