Duluth, Minn. – Minnesotans celebrating the Fourth of July may face sweltering conditions as heat index values climb into the upper 90s across much of the Northland on Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, air temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s, combined with dewpoints in the upper 60s to low 70s, will push “feels-like” temperatures well into the 90s from Grand Rapids to International Falls. Cooler conditions are expected closer to Lake Superior, where onshore winds will offer some relief.

Heat Index values could top 97°F in cities like Bigfork, Walker, and Grand Rapids Friday afternoon, with Duluth peaking near 90°F by 3 p.m. A Heat Advisory may be issued as early as Thursday if conditions persist. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in shade or air-conditioned spaces, and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours.

Cities along the North Shore, including Silver Bay and Grand Marais, will remain noticeably cooler, hovering in the upper 70s to low 80s due to lake breezes.

This is the most widespread heat risk so far this summer for northern Minnesota. More advisories could follow into the weekend if humidity levels remain elevated.
