Rhinelander, WI – An urgent Winter Storm Warning has been issued for northern Wisconsin as a powerful snow system is expected to bring up to two feet of snow, strong winds, and whiteout conditions through Thanksgiving morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, the warning begins Tuesday night and continues through Thursday morning, impacting Vilas, Oneida, Florence, and Forest counties. Snow will intensify overnight, with the heaviest accumulations expected in northwestern Vilas County, where totals could reach 12 to 24 inches. Elsewhere, 4 to 8 inches are likely across Oneida, Florence, and Forest counties.

Forecasters warn of gusts up to 40 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow and visibility below one-quarter mile at times. Travel across highways US-8, US-45, and Highway 70 may become very difficult to impossible, especially during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Officials urge motorists and Thanksgiving travelers to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible power outages due to heavy, wet snow and high winds. Hunters and holiday visitors to the Northwoods should be ready for dangerous road conditions through late Wednesday night.

Residents are advised to check 511wi.gov for the latest road updates before traveling and to keep emergency supplies — including food, water, and a flashlight — in their vehicles.

Snow is expected to taper off by early Thursday, but gusty winds and drifting snow may persist into Thanksgiving Day.
