Superior, WI – Northern Wisconsin is bracing for a dangerous winter storm as the National Weather Service issues a Blizzard Warning from 6 p.m. Tuesday through midnight Wednesday night for Douglas and Bayfield counties, including Superior, Washburn, and Bayfield.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, 8 to 14 inches of snow are expected across much of the area, with 12 to 16 inches possible in northern Bayfield County. Winds gusting up to 40 mph will create near-whiteout conditions in open areas and along exposed roads.
Forecasters warn that travel could become very difficult to impossible, especially during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. The strongest winds and heaviest snow are expected overnight Tuesday through midday Wednesday, reducing visibility and leading to dangerous road conditions.
The Blizzard Warning includes the Tribal Lands of the Red Cliff Band and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, where wind and snow off Lake Superior could worsen travel hazards. Areas closer to the lake, including the city of Superior, may see slightly lower snowfall totals but will still face blustery winds and blowing snow.
Meteorologists say a corridor of locally higher snowfall totals could develop somewhere within the warned area, depending on how lake-effect bands evolve overnight.
Officials urge residents to restrict travel to emergencies only. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if stranded. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation advises checking 511wi.gov for the latest road conditions and closure updates.
