ASHLAND, Wis. – Persistent lake-effect snow off Lake Superior continues to blanket northern Wisconsin late Sunday, creating slick roads and brief whiteouts from Ashland to Hurley. Forecasters report that an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow could fall overnight before conditions improve early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. CST Monday for Ashland and Iron Counties, including the Bad River Reservation and Madeline Island. Visibility has frequently dropped below a quarter mile inside stronger snow bands, and bridges and overpasses have quickly become icy under accumulating snow.

Travelers along U.S. Highway 2, Highway 13, and county roads near Lake Superior’s shoreline should plan for changing conditions over short distances, as lake-effect bands may shift suddenly through the night. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation advises motorists to slow down and allow extra braking distance, particularly where plows are still clearing roads.

Forecasters expect the snow to taper off around sunrise Monday, leaving behind icy patches for the morning commute as temperatures hover in the 20s. Drier weather and partial sunshine return by midday.
