Eagle River, WI – Intense lake-effect snow and blustery winds continue to hammer Vilas County early this morning, prolonging hazardous travel and causing additional power issues on Thanksgiving Day. Heavy bands overnight produced deep totals in the northern snowbelts, with more light to moderate snow still expected this morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. for Vilas County. Forecasters expect another 1 to 3 inches south of Eagle River and as much as 4 to 7 inches in the heavier bands across northern Vilas County. According to meteorologists, winds over 30 mph will maintain blowing and drifting snow across US-45, WI-70, and rural corridors near Lac du Flambeau. According to local emergency managers, numerous power outages have already been reported, with isolated additional outages possible through the morning.

Travel across far north-central Wisconsin, northwest Wisconsin, and the western Upper Peninsula will remain difficult where open terrain allows snow to drift back across roadways. Drivers may encounter sudden visibility drops as lake-effect bands shift.

Residents planning holiday travel should delay departures when possible. Keep an emergency kit—flashlight, food, and water—in vehicles and stay with your car if stranded. Light to moderate snow showers will persist into Weather Today – Thanksgiving Day 2025 before tapering later in the day.
